Functional Windmill Pump

A deeper insight into the project...

The aim for this project is to develop a gearbox for a water pump that uses wind energy to extract water from underground. The gearbox designed for a windmill uses a reciprocating pump to efficiently pump water. The gear box is intended for a wind pump whose tower is 12 meters of height, and carries a 2 meter diameter motor. The motor is positioned at a location where the average wind speed is about 4m/s enabling the rotor shaft to be able to provide 20Nm of torque at 66 RMP. The piston pump used has a weight of 12 kilograms including the rod, pole, connectors, and valves. Furthermore, the piston pump has a 6 centimeter diameter whose pump strokes must be 30 centimeters in height. The water pump should have a head height of 15 meters, which is the elevation from the aquifer to discharge. The complete report navigates through the design selection process and presents a possible operating design for the gearbox that meets all the requirements mentioned above. The in-depth FEA (Finite Element Analysis) performed in Solid Works ensures the material and the design chosen for the gearbox has infinite life.
